The Chief by Monica McCarty
3.0
I am on a journey to find the best Highlander romance/historical and it's starting to pay off.
Contrary to yesterday's books, this one was very good! I give it 3.5 stars.
I liked the romance, although, I was getting very frustrated with the male main character. He really gave a good fight to try not to fall for the female character. However, like all tall, dark and broody highlanders, he eventually lost the fight and surrendered! *snickers*
One thing that I didn't like is that typical/cliché "change of heart", by this I mean that he struggled to embrace their love until the very last possible moment. Only when threatened but the possibility of being left by Christina did Tor have his "change of heart" and admitted to himself and then to her that he loved her. Suddenly he is off galloping to save her and claim her as the love of his life- in case I am not being clear I am being sarcastic. It's kind of a pet peeve of mine.
Despite this, I kind of liked it, and under the circumstances, the struggles they faced when they first married are justified somewhat.
Now, what really captured my attention, and made me like this book more than any other Highlander romance I've read so far, was the backstory! Tor is to become The Chief of Robert Bruce's Highland Guard to uphold the Scottish king's cause and claim to the throne. Also, to defeat King Edward Plantagenet and England.
Omg, this is what I live for in highlander romances. The political/historical landscape that provided the plot for this book, other than the main relationship was so well crafted and the whole "highland guard" *swoons*. One of the best in this very specific sub-genre.
I have very high hopes that Monica McCarthy will become a favorite author in this genre. Initially, I really wanted to read her McLeods of Skye Trilogy first, but then I became intrigued by this series and started with this one and I can't say I am disappointed.
I am definitely going to devour this series and read the other books.
