I'm Glad My Mom Died
by Jennette McCurdy
dark
emotional
reflective
sad
fast-paced
This book is very hyped and I think a lot of it is that kind of memoir voyeurism that I find rather off-putting. It’s well done for what it is, which is just a really sad, unfortunate story. I don’t have much more to say about it than that, I guess. I read it mostly because I’d heard it was funny and sharp and … there’s humor in it, I suppose, but it’s incredibly bleak and I can’t say I actually laughed at all. Also the author read it and her speaking style is so aggressively monotone that even these really emotional moments felt sort of weirdly detached. All in all, a very strange book and not one I can really recommend unless you’re really interested in her, emotional abuse or eating disorders.
