Our Stop
by Laura Jane Williams
When I saw the comparisons to You've Got Mail, I had to read this book. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. The thing I really enjoyed about You've Got Mail is that Kathleen and Joe knew each other. They were rivals who during the course of the movie become friends. There's a building of a relationship that makes you root for them as they discover things about each other while the anonymous writing to each is going on the side. This story was missing that element for me.
Daniel and Nadia communicate through the "Missed Connections" section of the newspaper dedicated to ads from people seeing each other on the tube (was that it? I was never really clear on that. There was a whole set of ads just for missed connections on the tube?) Anyways, they have a few near misses throughout the book but other than that they are going about their lives, meeting their friends, partying, working etc. for 80% of the book. Just not enough connection for me to come out strongly rooting for them.
So in that regard it was more like Sleepless in Seattle but instead of a cute little boy, he has a flatmate that's coked out and doesn't know the meaning of consent, and she has friends that act sketchy then disappear on her while, let's be honest, she's "me, me, me" so you can't really blame them. In addition, there was this random point of view thrown in from this other character near the end of the book along with some extraneous information about other friends/characters that seemed a little much. I'll assume that these are characters in the author's other books? and maybe the new guy will be another book? Oddities. Ultimately, this was not for me.
