Assassin’s Quest, the conclusion to Robin Hobb’s Farseer Trilogy, picks ups shortly after the events of the second installment. In Verity’s absence, Regal has declared himself king, moving the court to Tradeford and leaving the coast of the Six Dutchies to fend off the Red Ship Raiders. Regal’s callousness and depravity and Fitz’s need for vengeance set Fitz on his quest to kill Regal and save the Six Dutchies.
Assassin’s Quest is slow-paced but never feels sluggish. The character work, as is true of all Ms. Hobb’s work, is stellar. The characters are fully realized, complex, and demonstrate growth, each with their own history and moral/ethic code. The world is lush and full. The writing – as is to be expected – is beautiful, able to paint picture or evoke emotions.
