The Changeling
by Victor LaValle
Perhaps one or two of the stars I’m throwing at this novel for sheer force of imagination. The plot actually didn’t do much for me, at least from the 60% mark onwards. Don’t get me wrong, the first half is quite thrilling and plenty frightening on its own, but the remainder of the story is catapulted into abject weirdness without matching the stark sense of reality built up earlier on. The ultimate result is a lingering suspicion that, after William and Apollo arrive at their destination, the author wasn’t quite sure where to go. Regardless, Mr. LaValle is hilarious, and surreal fantasy is always a genre I will welcome. Perhaps not entirely satisfying, but a healthy dose of dark fun.
