Gender Swapped Fairy Tales by Karrie Fransman, Jonathan Plackett
- Diverse cast of characters? No
2.0
Fransman's illustrations are gorgeous, but the text is simply an algorithmic gender-swap of public domain stories. Although the authors insist in the introduction this creates "fascinating new characters" and raises new questions, they don't actually do anything with the fairytales. New pronouns does not a new story make.
Also, some of the swaps don't even work grammatically. "The Sleeping Handsome in the Woods" is a nonsensical phrase because we don't use "handsome" as a noun in the same way we do with "beauty"
