This series has a great detective in Robert Hunter. I have been a little wary of the violence & gore since the first book I read though, and this is one reason I have not been reading the series in order (after checking the blurb). Does not feel like much of a problem as they are largely stand-alone stories.
Tanya Kaitlin, after a shower, receives a video call from her close friend Karen Ward. She can only see her blue eyes filled with tears. After the camera zooms out, she is shocked to see that her friend is bound and gagged. A person with a mask speaks up telling her that her friend will be freed only if she answers two questions he is going to pose correctly. Robert Hunter and his partner Garcia are called into the case. Progress is difficult with no clues and the motive being difficult to ascertain. Two more such calls are to follow and it is a race against time to catch the person tormenting seemingly unconnected people.
The plot premise is very interesting & unique. It also brings out one of the dangers we see in today’s times. There are a good set of characters and Robert Hunter is very good yet again. I would have liked to see some interaction between Robert and Tracy Adams. There is quite a bit of graphic violence but the tie-up to the plot is good and it feels appropriate. The last sections have Hunter running off with the resolution alone (quite unnecessarily).
Overall, a very interesting crime thriller backed by good procedures.
