Thorn Queen by Richelle Mead

2.5

Is it just me or is Richelle Mead writing a book of how a villain comes into their own? Eugenie’s decision seem to go to from bad to worse. By the end, she seems okay with the idea of conquering multiple kingdoms in becoming a queen to rule them all just because she has the power. Going to war? All is good. Shes completely not alarmed by the fact that her main lover Dorian treats his side squeeze terribly (ysabels treatment by Dorian is abhorrent). She cheats on her boyfriend and seems only mildly fussed by this. She force chokes her enemies right after being like “hmm maybe this is a thing only bad people do”. She holds a gun to her sister to force her to do her bidding and leaves her in chains. She has minions she has imprisoned and forces to do her will. Need I continue?

All in all I wonder if this is purposeful take on how a normal person becomes a villain or whether we are supposed to be agreeing with Eugenies choices.

Also, this book is super obsessed with rape. And, like, a ton of sex scenes. I don’t mind a good sex scene but this was a tad gratuitous.

All in all feels a little off as a series but still is enjoyable. I can’t wait to see who dark swan murders next. ;)

(don’t worry Richelle Mead I love your other series so very much)
