I described reading this as putting myself in the “war is hell” simulator. Unflinchingly terrible and beautifully compelling. It is such a pleasure to read war written by someone so versed in strategy and history, particularly Sun Tzu. That pleasure is double edged in that it makes the horrors of war all the more horrible. Not for the faint of heart. Having just finished, I think it will be a while before I’m ready to continue on in the series.
