Varina
by Charles Frazier
Not sure what rating I want to give this. Maybe 2.5. Some parts of it were really really pretty. But it was about four times longer than necessary, and the chronology was really hard to follow (at least in the audio book, maybe it was marked better in print) and the best parts were retreads of Cold Mountain. It does seem like Varina Davis was probably a pretty interesting and complicated historical figure, but Frazier came across as kind of wishy washy on her — best guess is he likes her a lot but didn’t want to appear to be going too easy on her? I don’t know if James is a real person, but he came across as just a black person to occasionally comment on where the First Lady of the Confederacy might occasionally be missing a point or two. He wasn’t much of a character in his own right and didn’t ever push his points very hard.
