The Princess Diaries
by Meg Cabot
I know I was biased by my love of the films (which I knew going in were different), but I struggled to connect with book Mia, or even to vaguely like her as a character. She is so shallow for 98% of the book! The other 2% is spent shoving her vegetarianism and support of Greenpeace down your throat. Another aspect I struggled with were the constant (often ick) sexual references - without these, I would happily give this book to younger readers, but they made me super uncomfortable. Disappointing in terms of content and characterisation, but I will say that this book is intensely readable, despite itself.
