The Bone Scroll by Elizabeth Hunter
5.0

The Bone Scroll is the first book by Elizabeth Hunter I have read in her Elemental Universe. I have been missing out. I have also discovered I have a lot of books to read. This book was exciting, mysterious, suspenseful, and romantic, with several sides of wry humor to make it a perfectly delightful read from beginning to end.

Coming into a series at the end of the series can be difficult. I have to say Elizabeth Hunter made it easy for one new to her books to slide right into the characters' lives and interactions, so you don't feel lost among the storylines or characters. Ben and Tenzin, although passionate for each other, are learning to navigate the waters of their age difference. Their perspectives on life, relationships, and time are disparate, but they keep trying to find their middle. This struggle as they build their bond is lovely to watch. Tenzin is frequently almost childlike in how she interacts with things--well, a child with really sharp swords and a penchant for shiny things. Ben is still grasping his new "life" and steering through the waters of vampire politics and protocols.

A significant thing I enjoyed about this book is the archaeological research that went into the descriptions. I spent a lot of time Googling Lalibela and the ancient churches in Ethiopia. I looked up tons of things to have those images playing in my mind while I was reading all the great words Elizabeth had put on paper. As evidenced by all the facts, her depth of research only added to the complexity of the novel and made it even more of a page-turner.

I have a new favorite author who captured my imagination with her tales of mystery, suspense, and very cool vampires. I cannot wait to read more of these books. But I will say I absolutely adored Ben and Tenzin, and I am looking forward to going back to get to know them better. If you enjoy PNR romance, urban fantasy and have not read Elizabeth Hunter; you owe it to yourself to pick up her books and read them NOW!
