Ted Chiang is a master of modern speculative fiction, and his stories are at once heady and intelligent while also being deeply personal and poignant. “The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate,” “Exhalation,” and “The Lifecycle of Software Objects” are especially tremendous stories, but this entire collection should be read by any science fiction fan.
