Mila 18 by Leon Uris

5.0

Mila 18 is an absolutely amazing novel. The novel is fiction but bases the events and characters on real events and people. It chronicles the beginning of WWII for a group of Polish Jews, non-Jews and an American journalist in Warsaw, Poland and follows this group's journey through their loss of rights, placement and life in the Warsaw Ghetto, and their involvement in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. From a historical standpoint, it offers readers an accurate account of how the Holocaust unfolded. The description of life in the ghetto is tragic and moving. It shows the triumph, the horror and the inner conflict people dealt with during this time with historical accuracy. Although this is historical fiction, one can learn a lot about the Holocaust and how the resistance movement operated.

The characters have such depth and humanity to them. I fell in love with them, especially with the dashing and heroic officer Andre. I was enthralled with the various relationships in the novel from the families to the romances of the characters. As the story unfolds you are able to see them fall in love, have passionate relationships, face heartbreak and face loss. The stories are incredibly moving. They are filled with joy, love, heartbreak, and tragedy. I could not put the book down. I highly highly recommend this book!!! It is a very long book and although the beginning was a little bit slow and uneventful, it is so worth the read!! It is such a wonderful book. It is one my favorites.
