Bay of Sighs by Nora Roberts

I remember thinking before reading that, as a sequel, it will be either better or worse than the first.

And it was better.

I loved the first one, but it raised the stakes in a way that a good sequel does. The romance has higher stakes because it’s between Annika and Sawyer, as opposed to Bran and Sasha.

Initially, I felt that Annika’s character may be a bit too “born sexy yesterday” but that was gone in this one. She is absolutely oblivious to aspects of human culture, but has knowledge of love and sacrifice and friendship and sex. It made her a genuinely fleshed out character.

The action scenes were so much more intense with higher stakes. The villain learns and ups her game this time and there is a lot of danger for our heroes.

I also like how they are settled in their banter and roles to each other. Tension, friendship, familial love and romantic love are all present and make for an entertaining book.
