Vuong can write, but there are some minor continuity errors and weird passages that tripped up my enjoyment of the story as a whole. Then the wrap up was abrupt. No resolution, no idea what happened to the main character, though the other characters are neatly summarized in the last page or so. Feels unfinished, unpolished.
The gay storyline seemingly appeared out of nowhere in the second half of the book, but was never developed, despite the main charcter's age, where sexually development is pretty much at a peak. Just a lot of loose ends.
