I’m genuinely surprised at some of the harsh reviews folks have given this book. It’s true that this isn’t your traditional YA story (less focused on love, more detailed descriptions, and so on), but it’s still a great story and keeps with the tradition of magical realism in Allende’s writing. While some of the western savior narrative can be problematic, overall, I really enjoyed the writing, story, and the characters.
