Excellent sequel, it delivered on what I wanted the most after reading Legendborn, which was on learning more about Rootcraft. We meet more practitioners and learn how deeply connected this community is. The moments in Volitions were some of my favorites in the series.

The story continues to delve into the inescapability of the racism Bree experiences, and what it means to hold power in a white supremacist society as a black woman. Bree is the perfect mixture of a powerful and vulnerable teenager that is not afraid to ask for help.

The ending made me so uncomfortable
Spoiler a white man taking over a black teenagers body was horrifying, I could barely get through the chapters with how angry I was

This is also the book that made me realize that no matter how much I want Bree and Nick to be the endgame, it will probably be Bree and Sel. Their relationship is fine, it is just your typical YA love triangle lol.

I feel like there may be one too many threads being added, which led to some side characters being forgotten (Tor for example, could have used just a bit more of her to be more impactful). But these are nitpicks that do not change how great this book was.

TW: racism, murder, kidnapping, body horror, violence, war, rape, toxic relationship.
