The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon

5.0

In an alternate history in which Israel collapsed in 1948 and the largest Jewish settlement in the world is in Sitka, Alaska (which is reverting to the control of the US in two months), a man is found murdered in a room in the hotel in which Detective Landsman is staying. Characters include a possible Messiah, a crime lord, chess geniuses, government agents, and Landman's ex-wife.

It's an incredible read, and if you don't read it you're missing something amazing.
