The first quarter of this book lacked any hook of interest until a story began to weave about the life of Billy. The narrative was interesting enough and painted pictures to remember the horrors by at this point before you began to wonder what is real or not. I would compare this anti-war book of questionable reality due to the trauma of war to The Things They Carried, however this was more powerful by far.
