Magic Tests by Ilona Andrews
4.0
"Magic Tests" was strange (unique!), vivid, memorable, and my gateway drug into the addictive world of Kate Daniels - as well as other series by Ilona Andrews.
I stumbled upon this short story in an anthology called An Apple For The Creature, which fell into my hands in hardcover via my library at a time when my marriage was falling apart, massive systematic layoffs were happening at work, and I was in desperate need of distraction and escapism.
"Magic Tests" and further novel introductions into "Post-Shift Atlanta" (i.e., Kate Daniels' world) provided that and then some. You think your day at work/ school/ home was bad? Well, you weren't attacked by any mythological creatures or almost eaten by your colleagues/ peers/ neighbors, were you?
