Malina by Ingeborg Bachmann
DID NOT FINISH: 20%

Oooh boy I tried with this one I really did. I got to page 57 and gave up.

I bought it as a cover buy in a bookshop in Brussels pre-pandemic and it has survived many moves with me.

It's feminist literary fiction by an Austrian author who's (to my knowledge) perhaps less well known now in the mainstream but beloved by those in literary circles.

The writing is almost stream of consciousness in that you can't quite stop reading but there are sentences and paragraphs and page breaks. I tried to get into the story of this woman living in Vienna who may be - it's not certain early on - going through some sort of life crisis internally and her two very different relationships with two very different men (her romantic/sexual/perhaps unhealthy relationship with Ivan and her platonic but supposedly unhealthy relationship with her roommate Malina), but I just couldn't.

I gave myself to page 57 and I just couldn't care enough. Even Rachel Kushner's excellent introduction wasn't enough to convince me to just keep reading.
