Unfortunately I read this book unaware that it was the fourth in a five-book series. However, this did not ruin the story. I was impressed with how easily I was able to catch on despite having not read the previous three books. I suppose its easily readable nature, engaging story, and minimalistic fantasies helped the book win the gold Newbery Medal! Well worth reading, even without the rest of the series. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and the characters were all dynamic. I am only giving it four stars because it is not the best of the Newbery's that I have read and am currently reading.
