Very enjoyable horror/western (though more western than horror) about a group that finds themselves on a journey to claim a bounty on a witch. The characters are all very well done and I don't just mean the main characters I mean the entire cast, every single character in this story. All the characters intertwine and pop up here and there meeting other characters on the same road to Burden County: the endpoint of our protagonists journey. The magical elements are very believable, while it is a soft magic system for sure, I like how it feels very at home in this story and unlike any other magic systems I've read before because it's a western. Reminded me of John The Balladeer with just a little more meat on its bones than those old tales. Feels very akin to those, with small different scenarios playing out on the weird and wild west Frontier our characters traverse. While I'd say none of the characters really get developed all that much, they remain pretty consistent throughout, you do learn more about them the longer you spend with them and learn new things from flashbacks or what other characters know of them. Very simplistic (not a negative) feels western but the few horror elements there are also land everytime, and every single character in here matters. That might be my one complaint, too many characters that towards the end you'll lose track of who some of the supporting characters are. If this sounds interesting to you in the slightest I'd say it's definitely worth checking out.

I knew Rabbit was Sadie's daughter from the very beginning, don't know if it was intentional but the author really laid it out there. I learned so much about all the characters that he may have been hoping I'd overlook a single line but I didn't, when it popped up I just said, oh it's Rabbit. And it was. I did however like that all the characters were orchestrated by Rabbit the whole time. That one I didn't see coming because I wasn't looking for it, but having it pointed out to me I thought, yeah that is kind of weird how many characters were willing to join the quest just because. A real Bioshock/ would you kindly moment. Iykyk. And I loved the ending with the ghosts and the living ladies, sadly Moses Burke was the only one I felt a little bad for.
