Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

Since I saw the first season of the drama in 2022, I’ve wanted to read this book. I finally bought it in December 2024, and I’m reading it now. What a long journey I’ve covered to finally get to it! This drama helped me learn about Japanese atrocities. I don’t know why, but I felt a deep connection with the story and an intense curiosity about what happens next. The drama is very well made, and it helped me visualize everything vividly.

I felt sad most of the time while reading the book. I cried, and at one point, I was utterly shocked. I don’t usually experience that kind of shock. I wish I had someone to talk to about the melancholy I feel after finishing it.

I have so much to say about the book, but I can’t grasp everything just yet. I need more time to reflect. Through this book, I lived across three generations, which is something I had never thought much about before. I don’t belong to any of these generations—I was born decades later—but the helplessness I felt is indescribable. I often think what I would have done at this point if I was on that place.

The worst part of knowing this story is that, although it’s fictional, I can’t console myself by thinking that none of the characters were real. I know the stories told in this book was someone's reality at some point.
