A Cosmology of Monsters by Shaun Hamill

4.0

Maybe I missed something, but this novel isn't really "Lovecraftian", especially since Hamill is a better writer who knows how to "show" rather than just "telling" the entire time. Also, no giant squid monsters. The tone is admirably creepy, the story engrossing, and the hints of flashback/flashforward make for a very engrossing timeline. It would be 5 stars if the ending really resolved better, but it felt a bit flat (maybe too Lovecraftian?) and left the book a bit hollow when it came time to leave the reader with some kind of message or takeaway. Still, it shows a lot of promise, and the atmospherics really were great.
