The Death of Us by Abigail Dean
4.5
challenging dark emotional reflective tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

We hear from both Edward and Isabel in alternating chapters. From Isabel we hear about how they met, about the attack and the aftermath as she talks to their attacker. From Edward we are in the present day as they go to court to face the man who attacked them and many others, as the victims give impact statements. Edward and Isabel are no longer together having divorced some time previously but they are staying in the same hotel while they attend court and spend some time together for the first time in years.

The person responsible for the attacks, targets a certain type of couple/family. He spends time learning their routines and studies their houses and surrounding area. He is patient. He tortures and rapes his victims before moving on in time to murder. Not for the faint hearted, I could imagine the terror of couples and families at the threat of this attacker. It is not until around half way through when we hear what actually happened to Isabel and Edward and it is horrific. I found this utterly compelling and very sad but with elements of hope.

Abigail Dean has a real knack for writing intelligent thrillers which don’t shy away from gritty and horrifying plotlines. Highly recommended!
