Plainsong
by Kent Haruf
Colorado. Plainsong by Kent Haruf. One of the things I’ve always loved about Colorado is that half the state is mountains and half is the start of the Great Plains—as flat as far as you can see. The wind whips across the flatland with nothing to break it up, and ranchers and farmers work the dry dry land. Plainsong takes place out in the plains and was an interesting read. It’s the story of several different people who all need community. I generally love books about “found family” and I liked this but didn’t love it as much as I expected to. The writing style took me awhile to get used to—he doesn’t use quotation marks when writing dialogue which really threw me. And there were some hard things that happened in this book that left me a little queasy. I loved a couple of the characters, and the ways their stories intersected, but this probably wasn’t my new favorite author.
