The Wapshot Chronicle
by John Cheever
It started well, reminding me of Lake Woebegone. But once the basic dramatis personae were established, it just wandered off into pointlessness. Not so much stream-of-consciousness, more lack-of-focus. Maybe real life is like that; a series of random connections. But I found the aimless, plot-free, ever-branching world with its many dead-end rooms, simply dull. A very juvenile creativity: incomplete, unpolished.
