I Am Number Four
by Pittacus Lore
This is an amusing story. It has all the usual elements, a hero, the mentor, the girl, the best friend side kick, the 2nd girl for the love triangle, and of course, the evil alien race trying to conquer the planet. In this instance, they are trying to conquer our planet after having conquered ‘Lorien’ another planet that had life that was similar to ours (as in they looked just like us amazingly enough - you know, two arms, two legs, eyes in the right place, oh and of course amazingly gorgeous, both male and female...). The ‘Loric’ though are split into two types, the ‘Cepan’ who are mentors and guardians, and the ‘Garde’ who are the warriors – and the main character of the story, Number Four, is a Garde.
I say the story is amusing, in that it's not an ‘Adult’ tale, it's aimed at a teenage audience, thus the recipe that I laid out above, but the author (the mythical Loric Elder, Pittacus Lore we are told) has given us a great action story, with some decent characters, and a pretty decent plot line.
This is not a story that is going to win a major literary award – such as Shakespeare or the like, so don’t expect that when you read it. This is about good old fashioned escapism, a bit of good vs bad, and whilst it may have some parts that are aimed at a younger audience (teenage instead of adult, with some dialogue that makes you want to gag!), it's still a good read.
The story progresses well as we gain an understanding of our Loric heroes, the Mogadorian enemies (who are also bipedal humanoid creatures – 3 different planets that all evolved the same – what a coincidence!!, although, the baddies are ugly of course, not like our pretty Loric heroes) and the Human characters that make up the rest of the list.
The story basically centres around the remaining Lorien on Earth. 9 Garde were sent to Earth, under the watchful eye of 9 Cepan’s. They have a charm on them, meaning that they have to be killed in order, 1 through 9. 1 to 3 have already been killed. This is the story of Number Four – and his fight to stay alive as the Mogadorians (or Mogs) come after him. It's really one of those lovely fairy tales, like Snow White where the queen wants to cut the heart out if the young princess...
He has not developed all his powers yet, and gets help from his Cepan, his new friend Sam, his new girlfriend Sarah and his dog Bernie Kosar.
The story is actually quite detailed, the author has put a lot of thought into all the back ground information, and I think this is what makes it worth the read. That and the fact that you know it's going to continue for quite a saga.
The writing, although a little weak in some of the dialogue (it's a bit like a teenage soap opera in parts with the interactions between Number Four and Sarah), is really good when getting into the details about the battles, and the descriptions of the Garde, Lorien, Mogadorians, and all the back ground information.
This is a lot of fun for an enjoyable read were you are not going to over stress your brain.
