The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams
4.0
At first I was wary of the premise. "Who," I thought, "do these men think they are, coming into the sanctum sanctorum that romance novels provide for women?"
I finished the book realizing the error of my ways and ready to recommend it to both the most die-hard romance readers and romance newbies alike.
Adams has written not only a great romance, but has provided an insightful meta commentary of the genre as a whole: the structure of the books, their inherent feminism... and also how exploring a woman's happily ever after can mean seeing a man fight for his by confronting toxic masculinity.
My main qualm with the book is the ending. I agree the second Big Grovel had to happen, but I wish the personal growth that went into it was more evenly spread throughout the book, rather than rushed into the last few chapters.
But all-in-all, THE BROMANCE BOOK CLUB is a solid romance novel that also manages to be an entertaining crash course in what an important role the genre does--and can--play in our society.
