The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

4.0

This is a great introduction to thriller novels! Going into it, I thought this book was going to be predictable. BOY WAS I WRONG! I never saw that coming!

This book is about a girl named Mariana, who is currently coping with the loss of her husband due to a freak swimming accident. While she is dealing with her loss, she is summoned to Cambridge university (her old stomping grounds), because her niece's best friend has been found dead. After speaking with her niece, she becomes certain that a professor at this school is responsible for the murder. When the body count seems to continue to grow... Marianna becomes more and more engulfed into the mystery of it all. Is it really the fault of this mr fosca and his group of "maidens".. Or is it someone else?

Thoughout this book I was nervous that it was going to be "too easy". I was scared that the suspense of Marianna being followed, the murderer continuing to kill, and the mental capacity of Zoe was going to be easily resolved with one arrest. However.... that was not the case! Everything in Marianna's life is flipped completely upside down at the end of this novel... and truthfully I never saw it coming!

The one thing I didn't like about the novel was the unnecessary amount of men who were "into" Marianna. I got a "Bella Swan" vibe off her... and we all know I don't necessary love those. I wish the the author would have done something a little different with the male characters in this book!
