Voyage of the Damned by Frances White

DNF at 38%.

I was so excited for this one. An Agatha Christie murder mystery with fantasy elements sounded exactly up my alley. The story has a lot of potential, but part of the problem was that there were so many elements to keep track of. The Province system, politics, and magic system were a huge undertaking for this genre-blend.

The narrative voice was also extremely immature. The main character, Dee, is from the Fish province, and is referred to often as “piss fish” by the Blessed of the Upper Provinces. Dee was so focused on making the other characters hate him that he also succeeded in making ME hate him. The tongue-in-cheek voice reminded me a lot of Mortal Follies, which I also DNF’ed.

I tried my best to stick with this one because I loved the premise. Unfortunately I was so un-invested in the plot that I had to put it down. 1.5/5
