“Seven Days In June” by Tia Willams
This is so damned good. Like. It lives up to all the hype. Once you know what it’s based on, you realize this is the absolute best Romeo + Juliet retelling.
The invisible disability and single motherhood representation was incredibly poignant. While there’s loads of triggers, there’s also Black people living lives of joy—which is something that I’d really love to have more of in my life.
I will read this author again. And the only reason it’s an A, rather than an A+, is because I need a little queer to go with the heteroness.
“You were just trying to survive,” said Shane. “When you're drowning, you’ll do anything to get air.”
“I know you twist history to make things easier for you, but I’ve never made you do anything. Do you ever think about your role in this?”
“I’m in violent support of this.”
