Reminded me somewhat of Throne of Glass but I actually liked this one better than T.O.G. It is slow with the build up, the last 10 chapters are really when it finally picks up. The world building was good, really focused on the creatures of the world. The story was interesting and kept me guessing at it's mysteries, aka The Guardian and The Prince. I really liked Odessa's character, she's brave, hardworking, smart, and compassionate. I'm glad she found people who accepted her and saw her worth. The secrets unfurled were not what I was expecting which I really liked and it made everything so much more intense. This is very much a slow burn with tension between the two main characters but spice does occur towards the end, it's just not a focal part of the book. The ending kept me on the edge of my seat and since it's left on a cliffhanger I cannot wait till the 2nd book!
I listened to the audiobook and the female narrator did a great job. The male one I wasn't much a fan of but he didn't do a bad job. His voice just didn't match the characters in my opinion. They were still able to draw me into the story!
