Nyxia
by Scott Reintgen
North Carolina Young Adult Book Award nominee.
3.5 stars. Enjoyable sci-fi: in a future world, the large Babel corporation sends workers to the planet Eden to mine an amazing, malleable substance known as Nyxia. The Eden locals (Adamites--yes, lots of Biblical references), however, aren't pleased and kill the humans, but sparing only their child. Now Babel will send desperate teens to do the work, training them against each other for the limited positions and for millionaire wealth if successful. Emmett wants to improve his family's meagre life, and pay for the kidney replacement his mother needs. How far will he go to make it happen--and how far can he trust Babel?
Book 1 in the series.
