A book with a polarized readership no doubt. You either love it or hate it. I happened to love it, and in fact, I regret that seeing those initial hate-it reviews months ago, I dismissed the idea of reading this book after The Untethered Soul, which was simply superb. Until my life coach suggested that I must read this now. Audio version read by the author. I love The Surrender Experiment, and I feel that most who hated it might have missed the whole point of this book because of the business empire building journey of the author. "I thought it was a spiritual book." Well, maybe there can be more spirituality in the business world too. We see such dichotomy between spiritual and business side of life. Perhaps we can close the gap. Perhaps we can bring more spirituality and mindfulness into every business setting, and enhance our overall experiences.

Michael Singer starts off with a desire to escape his inner chatter box, a desire we all share but unlike most of us, he is beyond determined. He cuts himself off of society, isolates himself in the woods and spends hours a day on meditation. Around the same time, he starts the experiment of surrender. If this is what life is asking me to do, who am I to argue? Surrender, be at peace, show up and do what is asked of you. And thus begins his most unusual journey first to Mexico, then to teaching at a college, and then to building The Temple of the Universe, and buying all the land surrounding it and falling into computers and writing software and starting a company that grows organically with massive opportunities coming his way one after another. The story feels a little Forrest-Gump like at times, except this is real life. Just as you think has had more than his fair share of great luck, things go south in a spiral, into an abyss of hopeless despair. When I learned that this man wrote the most incredible spiritual book, The Untethered Soul, with the backdrop of complete and utter despair (you'll have to read the book for details), I had incredible respect and awe for him. It's as if life were showing him challenge upon more difficult challenge as he would surrender on a higher and higher level. Spectacular really!

One of my big takeaway lessons, one that I've already shared with my clients, is this: What if you don't let your preferences of like and dislike be your guideline? What if you are more open to what life puts in front of you and do what the circumstance is asking of you? THIS. This spoke so deeply to my inner voice, which goes around all day saying "I like this! I don't like that! I like this person, I dislike that one." And on and on and on. Thank you Michael Singer for teaching this. I'm practicing this in my life now.

So if you're looking for a book to take you on a spiritual journey of YOURSELF, maybe this isn't the best book, because on this one, you are going on Michael's journey. He's not out to teach a lot of deep meditation or breathing or spiritual concepts. He's sharing the experiment of surrender, and he may just inspire you to surrender more.
