The Maid by Nita Prose
2.0

This book was a solid 3-star read for me — until the final chapter completely derailed it.

I actually enjoyed most of the story. Yes, it was fairly predictable, but that didn’t bother me too much. I appreciated the inclusion of a neurodivergent main character and found Molly to be quite endearing. I liked her strong moral compass and how she stayed true to herself; which, unfortunately, the ending completely undermined. That final twist really soured the experience for me.

While I appreciated the intent behind Molly’s characterization, the portrayal of autism felt a bit surface-level, more cherry-picked traits that served the plot rather than a fully nuanced, lived-in depiction.

The last portion of the book was where things truly fell apart for me. Plot holes began piling up, and the final twist just didn’t make sense. It felt like an attempt at shock value that sacrificed consistency and character integrity. What could’ve been a clever and heartfelt mystery ended up feeling sloppy and unearned.

Ultimately, I can’t give The Maid more than 2 stars. Disappointing, especially because I was genuinely enjoying it until the final pages.
