The Bullet Swallower by Elizabeth Gonzalez James

this one was okay! the beginning and ending were really well done, but the meatier sections of the story fell somewhat flat for me. most of the characters felt really distant. even our protagonist felt an arm's length away at all times. maybe on purpose, but i couldn't connect with them. this author has some stunning prose though and i am interested to read more of her, but i'm not sure if action is where her storytelling thrives. otherwise, a cool story that has a lot of foundation in reality and history of her own family with beautiful writing.
