Death Comes to Pemberley
by P.D. James
I generally hate Austen knock-offs because I am very protective of the characters, but thought I could trust P.D. James. She uses similar sentence structure as is found in the original book, so the voice was somewhat consistent, and the murder mystery was very P.D. James, but Elizabeth is sadly lacking in wit and intensity while Darcy is basically impotent. Hardly surprising, I guess, given the murder and having two young children and a great estate to manage, but hard to forgive. I think I enjoy Pride and Prejudice as a study of character and as a romance, but neither is really present here although Elizabeth and Darcy do miss each other when they are apart.
