This was such a cool book! I was so invested in the story and the characters from the moment I started it that I couldn’t put it down. And even when I did, it was on my mind the whole time. I loved it!
Tessa is a Variant, a person with a gift. She is able to absorb the DNA of anyone she touches and shift into that person. Her family kicked her out years ago and she’s spend the last two years with the FEA, Forces with Extraordinary Abilities, a secret branch of the FBI. There she trains with others like her, who each have their own Variation.
There is a serial killer on the loose in a small town in Oregon and Tessa’s first mission is to impersonate a local teen called Madison, who supposedly survived the killer’s attack. Nobody knows she died and Tessa has to become her in order to find out who is the killer. She hates being an impostor. The stress that comes with it, the lies and the danger. But she loves playing the role of a normal girl with loving parents and friends. The things she’s always wanted herself.
This book is surprisingly original. It’s basically X-men mixed with The Silence of the Lams or The Mentalist or something and it’s really well done. There are so many twists and things I didn’t see coming and Susanne knows how to keep me guessing. Or course, I had my suspicions, but I never knew for sure until the end. I liked the romance in this book too. It’s not the main thing in this story and it doesn’t dominate or take over. It’s pretty subtle and on the side, but the main thing is the question of who the killer is. Everything is in balance.
I really liked Tessa. I got so many feels through her in this book! She feels like an impostor and guilty for lying to such kind people who love their daughter so much and I get that, but at the same time she feels guilty for being happy. Sometimes it’s hard for her to remember that it’s not her they love, but Madison. They don’t know Tessa. But she’s a great main character and I rooted for her all the way. Her power is awesome. It’s similar to Mystique from X-men, though not completely the same.
I liked Alec, but he can be such a pain in the ass. The way he acts around Tessa is frustrating! And I loved Holly and Ana and Devon. The supporting characters were all important to the story and loved that. I hate it when there are unnecessary characters. Major is awesome by the way. He’s like a grumpy version of Professor X. Haha!
Even though I finished the book, there are still a few questions I have. I hope I’ll get an answer in the next book? Because I sure as hell will read that one! I recommend this book to fans of books with a good mystery and people with powers and stuff. X-men fans should really like this book, though I cannot garantee anything. This is just my opinion and I’m a huge X-men fan (so I’m a nerd, obviously).
