The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

“When we’re afraid, we lose all sense of analysis and reflection. Our fear paralyzes us. Besides, fear has always been the driving force behind all dictators’ repression.”

I had no clue about the Islamic Revolution and the history it had. Thanks to the Sibs bookclub for having this as their book for January, I might not have picked this book up otherwise. Usually when it comes to graphic novels i can devour them within a day or two, however this took me some time to read. The topic’s were quite difficult to envople but was also outstanding to say the least but be warned they can be emotionally heartbreaking and make you feel things you did not know you could feel while reading a book. Reading about Marjane’s life with the war, drug use, suicide and just trying to find her way in life was something i did not think would have a strain on my feelings but it did.

“I rushed to the living room to protect myself from I don’t know what, behind my best friend, a book.”

The only down fall i had with this was mainly the middle of the story when Marjane went to live in Eruope before moving back home. I felt a bit bored and not very interested in what was happening, even though i know for a fact if we did not have that storyline we would not have the rest of this story which brings us around in to a happier ending even with all that has happened in the life of Marjane Satrapi.

“To educate myself, I had to understand everything. Starting with myself, me, Marji, the woman.”

I feel many young people would benefit from this story and the impact it has, i mean i am still feeling the feels and i finished this a few days ago.
