To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

Jenny Han, you YA romance genius.
Before To All the Boys I've Loved Before - which undoubtedly became one of the biggest YA rom-coms of the late 2010s due to its adorbs Netflix adaptation - there was The Summer I Turned Pretty, a YA romance trilogy written by Jenny Han. I loved The Summer I Turned Pretty. I read the books about a dozen times, always on the beach, every summer through middle school and high school. However, I never heard about To All The Boys I've Loved Before because I grew out of YA romance novels in my late teens before growing back into them in my early twenties. Riddle me that one lol. Anyway I'm very glad I started this trilogy because it is sugary sweet in all the best ways.
One of the main reasons I loved this book is because Lara Jean Covey is such a relatable YA protagonist. Well, at least to me. She's in her mid-to-late teens, she's a bit awkward and shy... The perfect character to have all her deep, dark secrets aka her crushes released to the boys she's loved. Lara Jean's story is so hilarious and it is so easy to connect with her on a personal level.
Y'all know how much it irks me when YA novels in a written in a way that makes it very obvious that the author hasn't been around teens in decades. I did not get that feeling with Jenny Han's writing at all, which was a huge sigh of relief.
For me, what was so important about this novel was the female friendships!!! Yes, the burgeoning romance between Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky is adorable but I think that Lara Jean's relationship with her sisters was arguably more endearing. A lot of the time, in YA romance novels, the romantic relationship becomes the primary - if not the sole - focus. But a teen girl needs to develop friendships with other girls, too!! Major props, Jenny Han.
I'm very much looking forward to reading the sequels to this novel! But I also can't wait for the film adaptation of P.S. I Still Love You lol.
