The Vanishing Half
by Brit Bennett
There is not even the merest speck of happiness happening in here. I know, life is pain, Highness, and this book tackles some particularly painful topics. But, life is also joy and love and humor and my favorite books are those that present pain and happiness in equal measure.
Also, I'm not sure I have ever met anyone as shallow as most of these characters. In real life, everyone has a backstory. I was really frustrated with the one-dimensional portrayal of so many of the characters.
The story is compelling and the premise is interesting. I just think it could have been done better.
