since i read this book over the course of two years, my understanding of the book isn’t the best but i think i mistook this book for a murder mystery which is why i was disappointed by the lack of discussion about ambrose’s death. i disliked phillip although i’m pretty sure du maurier intended to emphasise his flaws and naivety and ignorance as an upper class white man. as much as i enjoyed the complexity of his character and his gradual change from hatred to love towards rachel, i wish it had a dual narrative and that there was more clarity over what caused ambrose’s death. the ending was eerie and disturbing which did take me aback. i wish louise had more of a voice i really loved her character and her rationality i wish i saw more of their friendship.
