This book was an enjoyable read! Incredibly unique voice, vibrant characters, and an intriguing plot. The main drawback of the book is that -- due to it being a mystery -- there are a few side roads taken throughout the story that lose focus of the central goal; and while it is still all in pursuit of that goal, the protagonist rarely calls attention back to the main focus which can make the story feel like it's zig-zagging at times. However, the last 25% of the book was nothing but a pleasure. The ending makes it clear that this is the first in a series; it leaves you with the satisfaction of a pause in the story but the looming shadow of a greater threat to come. The protagonist was sharp, interesting, and capable, and the side characters are all unique and bring something to the table. My favorite parts of this book were the narration and the display of poverty. The narration was unlike any other book I'd read before and acquainted me with the protagonist very quickly; and the attitude towards poverty was -- instead of being full of woe and pity -- one of "we do what we have to, and this is life," which was not only refreshing but relatable for anyone who has lived through similar conditions.
