Ant Colony by Michael DeForge

4.0

DeForge is brilliant. Every year I add a writer or two to a mental list of people whose work has really fucked me up while engaging with it. After both Ant Colony and Very Casual, I feel safe saying DeForge is on that list. The art is brilliant and disturbing. It's impossible to look away from. But unlike, say, Greg Irons (whose art is equally upsetting and difficult to put down), DeForge's writing strikes a balance with his art. His worlds feel real. His characters are honest. And looking into the work I'm not disturbed by the wild imagination, but by how clearly I can see myself reflected in this alien world. I'm very excited what DeForge's forthcoming work will look like.
