Thank you to Ballantine books and to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Fun for the Whole Family tells the touching story of 4 formerly close knit siblings now in their late 30s/early 40s who reunite for a surprise weekend in North Dakota after several years of not speaking to one another. Smith does such an amazing job of explaining the drama and the family dynamics through each of the siblings eyes and the ways in which this original family (including their deceased parents) have shaped their entire lives.
I loved, loved, loved this book! I was captivated by each of the 4 siblings stories and trials and the author does an amazing job of switching between perspectives and switching between current day and flashbacks. The story is touching and heartbreaking but also heartwarming at the same time while never feeling too bogged down in grief or tragedy. This is such a tender portrayal of the ways in which your parents and family shape your life well beyond your entrance into adulthood. I can’t wait to read anything and everything else this author writes.
