Beautiful & Terrible Things by S.M. Stevens
3.0
I am enjoying this book, the characters are all likeable and well written. I like the fact that social issues are addressed in a manner that is relatable. However, having so many crammed into the first 100 pages was a bit much. It felt like a Google search for what’s relevant and the results were crammed together instead choosing a few and focusing evenly on each one. This is probably the first book where I have felt like I was seen! These are the people I would surround myself with if I could find them in real life. I absolutely relate to Charley the most.
The issue I am having with this book is there are entirely too many social issues crammed in. I thought after the initial flurry of issues things would settle into maybe a couple to focus on. But 100 more pages in and it feels too overwhelmed with the need to state every single social issue on every single page."
Even though the book continued to cram social issues into every page as if the world was running out of them, I enjoyed the story. Although, I’m not sure it is believable that young people are facing the world as these characters are. I still feel as if it was a bit much, but the topics are important. I just wish people were truly facing these issues in real life the same way. Unfortunately, I think the people who need to read this story the most, won’t. It’s usually the people already aware of these social injustices who are open to learning more.
