The Professional by Kresley Cole

So, overall, this book very much falls into the category of erotica than romance for me, and with that comes something of a warning: this book is HOT but it has some seriously problematic elements, namely the “hero” in here is very much a textbook original alpha type, which I personally found stayed into the realms of domestic abuse in places. There is a lot of talk of “ownership” and “possession” of the heroine by the hero and it wasn’t in a sexy bedroom way either, but in a controlling and consuming her whole life kind of way. I found this particularly egregious between the 75%-90% points in the book (I was reading on kindle) and there was a point when I considered DNF’ing the book, but I persevered and in many ways I’m glad I did. The author really tried to save things by softening him considerably for the final 10% but I’m not wholly convinced it worked. Furthermore, the storyline requires a significant suspension of disbelief (and not in a way that I enjoy in fantasy) as it is a particularly bananas-pants contemporary. What pulled be out of the story the most, and made it abundantly clear to me that this book was written by an American, was the decision of the characters to rent a car to drive from St Petersburg to Paris - no right minded European would ever do such a thing!
